SURROUNDINGS & ACTIVITIES

Brasov is one of the most interesting cities in Romania. It is the capital of the county with the same name and makes a great starting point for excursions in the region or skiing on the best ski slopes in the Carpathian Mountains. From here many tourist zones begin like the Prahova Valley with its famous Sinaia, Azuga Busteni Spa and Bran Rucar Pass; the Olt Valley and the mountainous zones of Covasna county. The famous Poiana Brasov Resort is only 12 km from Brasov. Here you'll find at least 12 ski lopes and 11 ski lifts as well as other facilities for winter sports. This is an ideal region where climbing and other sports can be enjoyed. Starting from Brasov, Poiana Brasov, Predeal, Bran, Zarnesti, Rasnov, Vama Buzaului or the town of Victoria, the mountains can be reached within ten kilometers. From here, by railway or road, all points of interest can be reached within half a day at most. Brasov county also should be mentioned for its numerous historical, architectural, cultural and art monuments.<br>Places of interest in the city include the ruins of a citadel built in 1553, a 14th century Gothic church, the 13th century Church of Saint Bartholomew, and the town hall which was built in 1420. The two cultural centers here are the Brasov Regional Library, which has collections of ancient Romanian manuscripts, and a historical museum housed in the 15th century building of the first Romanian school. The Transylvanian University of Brasov (founded in 1971) is also here. <br>The Black Church is the largest (89 meters long, 38 meters wide) Gothic style building in Romania. Built between 1384-1477, its name (Black Church) comes from the great fire of 1689 which caused serious damage and left its walls black. It is remarkable for its Renaissance and Baroque elements, a great number of statues and one of the oldest organs (with 4000 tubes on 75 registers) in the country. A fantastic and very valuable collection of old oriental rugs / carpets (16th - 17th Century) is on display inside the church. <br>If you want to see Brasov as it really is, you can take the cable car up to Panoramic Restaurant which is on the top of Tampa Mountain. The city lies at your feet which gives you the feeling like your on top of the world. Without any doubt Brasov is an amazing place, and certainly worth a visit. <br>
